Warriors criticize Grizzlies' 'dirty' foul. In Game 2, Dillon Brooks, who plays for Gary Payton II, suffered a shattered elbow.
The Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies are already tussling after only two games into their series. Dillon Brooks, a Grizzlies winger, was ejected less than three minutes into Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals in Memphis on Thursday after being called for a Flagrant 2 foul.
Brooks took a swipe at the ball from behind as Warriors guard Gary Payton II broke out for a fast break opportunity and tried a shot, but ended up inflicting a major blow to Payton's head. Payton landed hard on the floor, damaging his elbow as he attempted to support himself, and was eventually ruled out of Game 2.
Following the Grizzlies' 106-101 victory, Steve Kerr gave some bad news:
"That wasn't a violent confrontation. It was filthy, "During a TNT interview between the first and second quarters, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of the Grizzlies. Kerr went at Brooks even harder after the game. "The distinction is rather obvious. You don't club a guy in mid-air and break his elbow that way. That's the point at which the line is drawn."
After catching an elbow from Grizzlies big man Xavier Tillman, Warriors forward Draymond Green headed to the locker room with a bloody face just seconds after Payton's injury.
On the play, no foul was called, and the sequence was not reviewed. On his way to the locker room, Green threw double middle-fingers to the FedExForum audience before returning to the floor to start the second quarter.
Given what happened in Game 1 on Sunday, when Green was ejected in the second quarter after a disputed Flagrant 2 penalty on Brandon Clarke, the aggressiveness of the first quarter was especially notable.
If the first two games are any indication, this will be a physically demanding and ferocious series. With a trip to the Western Conference finals on the line, it will be up to both teams to keep their calm.
